Amongst hairstyles every year there is always at least one up-do. And for 2010 its no different. Gone are the tacky interpretations, instead this year's up-dos will all embody elegance without erring on the side of caution. If you’ve been wondering how to get those sexy chignons and twists, wonder no more and read on to find out how to get this Winter’s sexiest evening looks. Oh and look, just in time for party season.

1. The Chignon. Easily the oldest hairstyle in the book because it’s the sexiest, and the one that always leaves men drooling. No matter how you do it. And it’s as easy as pulling a ponytail and twisting it to your crown and securing with some pins. Originating from the French "chignon du cou" (which means "nape of the neck"), chignon hairstyles are elegant low bun or twist that sits at the nape of the neck. A little tip, spray your hair after you’ve twisted it into place, and spray your pins as well before you pin, both of these extra spritzes allows for more traction and a stronger hold on your twist. 2. The Top Knot. Britney Spears started this look and it has been refined somewhat and is now seen on almost every runway. Popular on the street in 2009, the top knot conveys a young and playful look. In 2010 topknots are best in two forms: the sleek and the messy top knot. Messy top knots are top knots Britney Spears style and style in whichever way works most comfortably for you. Sleek top knots are tidy buns that sit right at the top of the head, like those seen at Marc Jacobs and Nina Ricci for Spring 2010. Sleek top knots best sit dead centre of the head, but can also work slightly off to the side. These types of topknots work best on straight hair. Hair should be neatly brushed upward and slicked into place; then the top knot twisted around neatly and fastened.

The sleek top knot works well in an elegant ballerina-esque way - so in 2010 don't be afraid to add a ribbon or some embellished clips to accentuate the femininity of the style. You can also try plaiting the hair first, then twisting it into a top knot, for another variation on the look. View Top Knot Updo Hairstyle
